Papers 1831-1934.

The collection contains papers of various members of the Devereux family of Penobscot, Maine, as well as materials from other residents of Penobscot and Castine, Maine. The papers of Reuben Devereux include an account book, 1868-1873, and various documents listing school accounts. Diaries of his wife Ursula Devereux from 1879-1884 and 1897-1898 are also found in the collection. A few papers from Reuben and Ursula's sons Charles and Mark Devereux are also found here; most notable are letters to Mark Devereux, 1862-1864, from his brother Charles while Charles was serving in the 16th Maine Infantry in Maryland and Virginia. Documents associated with various other individuals are also found in the collection; their relationship to the Devereux family is unclear. Of particular interest is an account book, 1831-1855, of Alfred Hutchings of Penobscot listing amounts owed to Hutchings for goods sold and for services he provided. Also found in the collection are letters from Hollis M. Leach of Penobscot written in 1862 and 1863 to his father and sister describing his service in the 28th Maine Infantry in New York, Florida and Louisiana; and a composition book, 1899, of Frank U. Grindle of Castine.
